On this day, 19th July 1997, the Scottish School Under 17 track and field team took part in the annual SIAB international at Morton Stadium, Dublin. Team Scotland had 3 Perth Strathtay Harriers representing them that day, in glorious sunshine.
First on the track was Ali MacDonald in the 400m hurdles, coming home in 59.19 seconds. This was an incredible run in the heat of the day and only just outside the personal best he had set at the Scottish School championships the month previous.
Following in the next event, 300m hurdles, was Angela Hutt. She too had an incredible run, also just missing out on a personal best (46.41 seconds). Angela was back in action, twice, later in the day. It took a personal best jump of 10.70m to take 5th place in the triple jump and then then lined up Aileen Willans (Ayr Seaforth), Lynne Fitzpatrick (Falkirk Victoria) and Heather McKay (Dunfermline West Fife) in the 4 x 300m relay. The girls were run out on the line for bronze medal after a strong performance.
In the 200m, it took a personal best run of 22.91 seconds from Bruce Gibb to secure 6th place and, like Angela, was back on the for the relay. He anchored the 4 x 400m team to silver, being run out by England in the final 50m, despite the massive personal best relay split. Along with him in the team were Scott Keenan (Ayr Seaforth), John Shenava (Falkirk Victoria) and Jonathon Simpson (City of Edinburgh).
The days event would feature 2 future Olympians. Goldie Sayers (Olympic Javelin Bronze 2008) won the javelin while Tim Benjamin (European 4 x 400m Silver 2006) took silver in the 200m.
