On this day, the 20th of July 1996, the SIAB Schools International Track and Field match took place at Northwood, Stoke-On-Trent. In the teams that day were 3 Perth Strathtay Harriers.
In the opening event of the day, Richard McDonald set a new meeting best performance as he won the 400m hurdles in a time of 53.1 second. Richard would follow up that gold with a silver in the 4 x 400m relay. It would take a photo finish to separate Team Scotland and England as both teams ran 5 (FIVE) seconds quicker than the previous meeting best performance. In the triple jump, he narrowly missed out on a hat-trick of medals, finishing 4th with 13.53m.
Claire Lomas took 6th place in the 80m hurdles (12.3 seconds) in a blank finish where 4 athletes from 3rd place down were separated by just 0.3 of a second. Claire had a very consistent season in ’96 delivering a number of a results in the low 12 seconds.
Alan Erickson lined up in the 800m, having set a personal best of 1:59.2 to win the Scottish Schools title the month previous but had a difficult day in Stoke, coming home in 8th.
